Competition results

Thanks to everyone who suggested a new name for our group, and all who voted on the suggestions. There were lots of good ideas. We can now announce that the winning name is...

EdSign

We are currently working on plans for the new session which we will announce as soon as we can. This year we hope to have a majority of Deaf presenters. We have lots of ideas already, but if there are people you think we should invite, please do get in touch!

We are also looking for new sources of funding to allow us to pay the interpreters and contribute towards the travel and accommodation costs for our presenters. If you know of any charities or businesses who might be able to help, do let us know.

Genetic information in BSL

Message from Rachel Belk, a PhD student at the University of Manchester:

My PhD research study is looking at genetic information in BSL - Deaf people's views on the format of information resources and the specific signs that they prefer and use. The aim is to find out more about the role of translation issues and communication within the barriers that exist in accessing information about genetics, genetic services and related areas of medicine.

I am seeking Deaf people over the age of 18 to take part in the study - all the information is on the website, people can decide to take part by completing the online consent form and then they can reply in BSL using a webcam (or in English if they prefer). The website is at http://www.mhs.manchester.ac.uk/geneticsigns and is open now.

With best wishes,
Rachel
