Abstract
The Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act came into force in 2006 and established Bòrd na Gàidhlig as a public body which is responsible for the preservation of Gaelic as an official language in Scotland.

The Act gives an official framework to the efforts to preserve and sustain the Gaelic language and culture. In this talk Wilson puts forwards some of the advantages and pitfalls of developing a language using a legislative approach and discusses how the lessons from Gaelic may be applied to BSL.
