Abstract
The idea of a virtual forum – bilingual in BSL and English – to pool knowledge about BSL and Deaf people has been around for some time. BSL:UPTAKE, led by Heriot-Watt University, in partnership with the Scottish Government’s Equality Unit, the University of Edinburgh, Queen Margaret University and others, aims to turn this cherished idea into a "virtual – but at the same time very substantive – reality".
Supported by the Scottish Funding Council, BSL:UPTAKE will contribute to informed public policy making and help improve decision-making by Government and other authorities, by making it easier for both Deaf and hearing people to access material and ideas relating to BSL on the Internet.
