Abstract
David Brien worked at the Deaf Studies Research Unit, University of Durham for over twenty years and was co-director of the Unit with Dr Mary Brennan.
During this time, the unit collaborated with the British Deaf Association (BDA) on a number of projects, including
- the BSL/English Dictionary
- the British Sign Language Tutor Training Programme
- post-graduate programmes in BSL/English Interpreting
- post-graduate programmes in Deaf Studies,
as well as undertaking government-funded research projects on subjects such as BSL/English interpreting provision in Britain.
David will consider to what extent the philosophy and strategy that informed these projects and their outcomes has relevance today for members of the Deaf community and the professionals who provide services to Deaf people.
